Coastal Fortification on the Gulf of Mexico
Until the late 1940's, coastal fortification was a primary line of defense for the United States. Several distinct generations of coastal fortification exist, each a unique insight into a period of U.S. history.
Along the shores of the Gulf of Mexico, coastal fortifications of four generations, the Third System (1817-1867), the Endicott period (1890-1910), the post World War I period (1918-1936), and the World War II era (1937-1945) can be found. Over the last couple of years, I have had the opportunity to visit several sites which have examples of these periods of fortification.
In the following pages, I have included pictures of the fortifications from several sites. They are divided by location, and further subdivided by era when possible.
Any suggestions or corrections to these pages are greatly appreciated. I can be contacted at my email address, listed at the bottom of the page.

I've cleaned up all the dead links from the links page, and added quite a few new links. I am slowly changing the background of all the pages to something easier to read (like this page). I've added pages Fort Taylor at Key West, and I will be adding pages for the Martello Towers at Key West shortly.
